What Is a Neck Hump And How To Get Rid Of It

Posted on July 18, 2023December 29, 2023 by Dr. Donald L. Aivalotis, II

What Is A Dowager’s Hump?

A neck hump or Dowager’s hump is actually considered a hyperkyphosis in medical terms. It describes the condition whereby the natural forward curvature of the upper spine is accentuated. Some texts incorrectly label this a kyphosis.

The term kyphosis simply describes the natural and normal forward curvature of the spine. When this curve becomes too great and exaggerated, the term hyperkyphosis is used and describes the medical condition.

Similarly, the curvature of the lower spine is called a lordosis and the corresponding medical condition is called a hyperlordosis.

The nickname “Dowager’s Hump” can be translated as a “Widow’s Hump,” describing the rounded upper back of an old-fashioned widow.

What Causes A Dowager’s Hump or Neck Hump?

The most common cause of a Neck Hump is poor posture. Chronic hunching of the upper back from a forward-leaning posture or modernly looking down at devices causes the neck to straighten. This creates a downward force in the upper back leading to increase hunching over time.

When acquired in this manner, the condition can be reversed.

Other causes of a Dowager’s Hump are…

  • Thoracic Spine Compression Fractures (usually due to Osteoporosis or compression-type injuries)
  • Scheuermann Disease or Scheuermann Kyphosis
  • Weak back and shoulder muscles

A similar condition, called a Buffalo Hump is an accumulation of fat tissue in the same area, giving the appearance of a hump. This is a sign of a more serious condition. In any case, consulting your physician is prudent.

What Are The Symptoms Associated With A Dowager’s Hump?

Aside from appearance, a variety of symptoms may also be present if you have a neck hump…

  • Pain or stiffness in your back, neck, and shoulders
  • Limited spine or neck mobility
  • Increased low back pain
  • Increased low back curvature (hyperlordosis)
  • Tight hamstrings
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Trigger Points
  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome
