Teeter Inversion Tables

Dr. Don Recommends

Teeter Inversion Tables

One of my most frequently recommended home-care tools for appropriate patients looking for a simple way to incorporate gentle spinal decompression at home.

What Is an Inversion Table?

An inversion table allows the body to recline below horizontal while the feet remain securely supported. Gravity creates traction through the spine and can temporarily reduce loading on spinal joints and surrounding tissues.

I have recommended inversion as a home-care option for selected patients for many years. It isn’t appropriate for everyone, which is why screening and gradual use matter.

Dr. Don’s Take

If I were purchasing one today, the X3 would still be my sweet spot. The X1 provides the essential function at the lowest price, while the LX9 makes sense if comfort and premium features are worth the extra cost to you.

Using It Safely

Start Slowly.

More inversion is not necessarily better. The goal is a comfortable, controlled decompression experience — not hanging completely upside down for as long as possible.

1. Get Cleared First Make sure inversion is appropriate for your health history.
2. Use a Shallow Angle Start conservatively and allow your body to adapt.
3. Keep Early Sessions Short Gradually increase duration based on comfort and tolerance.
4. Stop if Symptoms Worsen Head pressure, dizziness, visual symptoms or worsening pain are reasons to stop and seek guidance.
Important

Who Should Be Careful With Inversion?

Inversion changes both mechanical loading and pressure within the body. Certain medical conditions can make inversion inappropriate or unsafe.

  • Uncontrolled or significant high blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular or circulatory disorders
  • History or elevated risk of stroke
  • Glaucoma or increased eye pressure
  • Retinal problems
  • Significant dizziness, vertigo or balance disorders
  • Recent surgery or significant injury
  • Severe osteoporosis or fracture risk
  • Conditions involving increased intracranial pressure
  • Pregnancy or other conditions where a physician limits activity
Do not use an inversion table simply because you have back pain. Your medical history matters. Check with an appropriate healthcare professional before beginning inversion if you have medical conditions or aren’t sure whether it is safe for you.
